Intervista a Tim Bengel : L’Artista nell’Era dei Social

english version below

– Ultima domanda: raccontami  i tuoi progetti futuri …

Tim Bengel, only 25 years old artist, managed to climb to the top of the art world within just a few years. After exhibitions in Europe and Asia, Bengel recently celebrated the opening of his first solo show in the renowned Hoerle-Guggenheim Contemporary Gallery in New York City. Artnet calls him a „Wunderkind“ and the New York Hedonist Magazine claimed to „have witnessed Genius“ after attending the opening night. It was in the year of 2014 when Bengel developed his own innovative technique. In Social Media, his performance videos reach over 250 Million people: we’ve met him in Florence during the XIth Florence Biennale where he received the “Lorenzo Il Magnifico” Special Award. Find out what he told us!

What’s the meaning of your art and of “being an artist” nowadays?

For me art means doing things differently on the one hand, and searching for freedom on the other hand. And that’s what I want to do. I never wanted to imitate another famous artist, I wanted to find my own way, with my own technique, own materials (Tim works with glue and sand) and own look, without accepting rules from authorities (like Accademic world, teachers, commercial influences).

How do you communicate your art? What kind of tools or strategy do you use to promote yourself and reach the public?

I started to publish my works on Facebook and Instagram. In the beginning I had no money, so it was the only opportunity I had. Then one day a friend of mine published , by chance, a video while I was making a work. Then Business Insider, New York Magazine asked me to share the video and it had millions of views in few hours so I’ve been going on this way.

Do you think that social media are useful to reach galleries and collectors? First of all Instagram and Facebook, you have a lot of followers…do you manage the social media alone or are you followed by an agency?

It’s a great chance for any young artist to show his work! Not for already famous ones because they don’t need social media – they sell the artworks also without them. For emerging artists are very import to build connections in order to broadcast and promote their artworks. And I work without an agency, that’s the best way to understand the Social Media and stay authentic.

-Tell me about your relationship between galleries and collectors: are you represented by a gallery? How do you choose where to exhibit your artworks? Have you already exposed during an art fair?

In the USA I am represented by the HG Contemporary Gallery and Philippe Hoerle-Guggenheim. I also have some business partners in Germany and in Asia. But it’s important to protect your work from to many commercial influences.

-And what about the sales? You are very young but are you entering the market easily or with difficulty?

It was a very difficult path and it still is. You are always searching for your position in a fast changing art market, thats difficult but exciting!  The art market is a very closed world so you need connection to enter in the circle of big fairs and museums. Sometimes I sold my artworks directly to the clients, by Facebook, through the galleries or online (through Artnet or Artsy). At the moment my works are in private collections as Royal family, Saudi Arabia and collection Jägermeister, New York, among the others.

-In your opinion are there differences between the European and the US Art Market? Have you already been in Asia for an exhibition?

I am probably not in the Business for long enough to tell. But my benefit is, that through the Social Media my artworks are well known all over the world. Whether I am exhibiting in Asia, Europe or the USA, the people are interested in my work everywhere. My work doesn’t know boarders!

-Last question: Tell me about your past and future projects…

For the future I have a lot of ideas, but so little time. I will use the next months to clear my mind and plan my next steps. Stay curious!

But we’ve already known that we could see his artworks at Miami Art Basel on December 2017 and a solo show at Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art, Munich, Germany.
